A stellar field of 28 Quest Industrial Mid-American Stock Cars were on hand to compete for the 2017 version of the National Short Track Championships at Rockford Speedwway.
With two events left on the Quest Industrial Mid-American schedule Dan Gilster lead Ron Vandermeir by 62pts heading into the tight quarters of Rockford Speedway.
Brookfield Wisconsin’s Mark Pluer started off the day as the Wehrs Machine fast qualifier. Followed by Ron Vandermeir. Gilster would qualify 10th.
Heat race winners were Chad Smith, Rick Corso, Brian Holtz, and Ken Benson. The last chance race was won by Iowa’s Cory Houdek. Also transferring to the feature from the last chance race were Cody Potter, Kenny Joosten and Ken Calhoun.
Dan Gilster and Ryan Gutnecht brought the field of 24 car to the green flag. Gutnecht jumped to the lead only to have a yellow come out on lap 3 for a spin between Corso and Kenny Benson.
The yellow would come out 1 lap later as Bill Prietzel would hit the turn one wall ending his day.
The field would take the green with Ryan Gutnecht again leading the restart. On lap 10 Kevin Gentile took the lead from Gutnecht. The yellow would again come out for a spin in turn 4.
Gentile would lead the next 20 laps until Vandermeir finally took the lead from Gentile with a pass on the inside.
Lap 33 would see the caution as Brian Holtz broke a suspension part on the left front stopping on the back stretch.
Vandermeir would survive a couple more cautions and Gilster used the cone and cautions to gain positions and finish on Vandermeir’s rear bumper. Oak Creeks Bobby Gutnecht would claim the 3rd spot.
As the Quest Industrial Mid-American stock cars head to LaCrosse fairgrounds for the Oktoberfest Race Weekend. Dan Gilster leads Ron Vandermeir by 46 points. With the 2017 Mid-Am champion to be decided on Friday Oct, 6.
