CARTER GETS THE BETTER OF BROCKHOUSE ON OPENING NIGHT AT TOMAH SPARTA SPEEDWAY

By:  Paul Reichert

May 9, 2025

We were all geared up and ready to kick off the 2025 season last week, but unfortunately Mother Nature had to interrupt the proceedings and ruin what was looking to be a great first night with the Brockhouses in charge.  This time the weather was picture perfect to bring the 2025 season to life at Tomah Sparta Speedway. The fans came out in force with the biggest crowd in some time, and the pits were packed with six different divisions ready to go racing.  Defending Great North Legends champion Ayrton Brockhouse went to the back after a spin during the feature. Brockhouse nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback to victory, but one driver prevented that from happening. SpeedFest winner Robby Carter had too large a lead for Brockhouse to overcome and captured his second straight feature win.

Matt Trautsch outran Greg Erhardt to lead the opening lap of the 30 lap Great North Legend feature.  Russ Weiler quickly caught up to Trautsch and powered around him to become the new leader on lap two.  Rose Borntreger was also making her way to the front and dismissed Weiler from the top spot on lap four.  On lap eight, two-time Legends champion Ayrton Brockhouse spun coming out on turn four to bring out the yellow.  Lincoln Cain powered past Borntreger on the restart to settle into the lead.  SpeedFest winner Robby Carter was making quick forward progress to the front of the field.  Just before the crossed flags were displayed, Carter shot under Cain to make himself the top dog of the race.  Ayrton Brockhouse’s drive through the field from the back was impressive, and two late race yellows would help his efforts.  A spin by Kaleb Baumgart in turn two on lap 20, and a loop-de-loop by Devon Lee in turn four with six left to run gave Brockhouse a fighting chance to make it five straight feature wins.  Brockhouse quickly charged by Cain to take over second on the restart and gave him five laps to complete an impressive feat.  Carter would keep a safe gap over Brockhouse to capture a second straight checkered flag win at Tomah Sparta.

In the INEX Bandolero feature, Jaxxston Jump powered by Ethan Jensen to lead the early going of the race.  Lap five saw the cars of Zadale Demeny, Blake Michael and A.J. Sauter collected each other in turn two.  Only Sauter would not be able to return to competition.  The restart did not get very far as the lead duo of Jump and Ace Oldenhoff got together coming out of turn four.  Jase Riedner would lead the field to the restart, but Bentley Thompson wasted little time to surge past Riedner for the lead.  Thompson and Axel Oldenhoff, the two most recent Bandolero champs here at Tomah Sparta, traded the lead in the middle stages of the race before Thompson took total command on lap eight.  Yellow flew again on lap 10 for a dust-up coming out of turn four between Michael, Christopher Flynn and Wesley Baumeister.  As Thompson and Oldenhoff resumed their own fight for the top spot, a major mishap occurred down the back straight with five laps remaining.  Hard contact between Jump and Kam Martinez sent Jaxxston into a barrel roll down the back straight.  Martinez drove away while Jump emerged from his racecar unscathed.  Unfortunately we ran into the 20 minute time limit on the feature before we could complete the 20 laps, and that would give the victory to Thompson.

The Sportsmen feature was also round one of the V8 Border Battle between the cars of Tomah Sparta and Elko Speedways.  Conrad Jorgenson outran Julie Jorgenson to lead the opening laps of the main event.  Fast qualifier Charles Vian, Jr  was picking off drivers one-by-one before he set his sights on Jorgenson.  It only took a couple of laps for Vian, Jr. to reel in and drive around Jorgenson to put himself at the head of the pack on lap five.  Former Modified racer Derrin Salo began to apply a lot of pressure on Jorgenson for second. Salo tried to motor around Jorgenson on the outside, but he could not finish the pass and had to settle back behind the 3 machine.  As the field reached the halfway mark of the race, things settled down between the front three as they pulled away from the rest of the pack.  Vian, Jr. would not be challenged the rest of the way as he took the checkered flag in first.

Landon Lockington would power to the front of the Hobby Stock feature, which was also the first round of the V8 Border Battle that included a couple of drivers from Jefferson.  Lockington would have his hands full for some time with Mathew Cleveland right behind him and veteran driver Scott Riedner to his outside.   Cleveland tried several times to find an opening to power his way underneath Lockington but never got that chance.  Riedner tried to use the outside lane but his “Shaggin’ Wagon” was not working well to drive around Lockington.  Soon fast qualifier Tony Ciano would join the battle for the lead and make things even more challenging for Lockington.  Suddenly drivers were dropping like flies as Ciano suddenly slowed with an issue just before halfway that forced him into the pits.  Another challenger to Lockington’s lead fell by the wayside two laps later as Cleveland also slowed down the back straight.  Riedner not only continued to battle for the lead with Lockington, but now Jimmie Jorgenson entered the picture as those two ramped up the pressure on Lockington in the closing laps.  Lockington pulled off another amazing feature performance to wind up in victory lane with career feature win number two.

Jacob Iverson outran Joshua Schwartz to turn one to stake his claim to the early race lead in the Hornet feature.  Tristan Drazkowski quickly moved into second on lap two and drove around Iverson to put himself into the lead.  That lead would be short lived for Drazkowski as Paul Finch was on Draz Jr.’s tail, and the 2023 champion powered into the lead on lap five.  After the mid-race point of the race Finch’s mirrors were filling up with the orange machines of Landon Peterson and Tristan Finnigan.  A yellow would help both of them out in their pursuit of Finch when rookie Braxtyn Moore and Caitlin Wood tangled in turn three on lap nine.  Finch was able to pull away and leave Peterson and Finnigan to fight over second.  Both drivers got one last chance when rookie Hunter Bush spun in turn one with two laps to go.  Finch easily pulled ahead on the final restart to claim an emotional feature win, FInch’s first since the 2023 season finale.

The Six Shooter feature saw Ghage Moore outrun Aidra Day to the lead at the start.  A caution period three laps in allowed the competition battle with Moore for the lead.  Contact between Tristan Finnigan and Christopher Neal sent Neal into the spin cycle in turn two.  On the restart Curtis Hellickson began to quickly progress through and catch up to his Moore family sibling.  On lap six last year’s High School Racing Association champion charged by Moore to take over command of the race.  The Moore family battles would continue over the second half of the race as Alivia jumped into second just after halfway and tried to close the gap on Hellickson.  There would be no stopping Hellcikson as he drove away with his first checkered flag win of 2025.

The Central Wisconsin Racing Association returns for the first of three appearances at Your Hometown Race Track next Friday, May 16.  A pair of 30 lap features will be run during the Everett Fox Memorial, as we salute Tomah Sparta’s first CWRA champion from 1964.  The Hornets and Six Shooters will compete once again along with the season debuting Crown Vic and Hippo divisions.  The Hippos are better known as the Mini-Vans, which are running for the first time at Tomah Sparta after a two year absence.  Gates open at 5:30, the battle to be the quickest begins at 6 with group qualifying and the heart stopping racing action roars to life at 7:30.
