CLEVELAND TAMES TWO RIEDNERS AT ONCE TO WIN AT TOMAH SPARTA SPEEDWAY

By: Paul Reichert

May 30, 2025

Now that the new asphalt in the turns at Tomah Sparta Speedway has had a week to cure, we were ready to witness more incredible racing action. The new asphalt would create even more speed and it showed in qualifying as our five regular divisions all established a new track record or broke the ones just set last week. We saw even more competitive racing action in all six divisions, including the vintage modifieds from the Milwaukee Stock Car Racing Association. The best feature race of the night was the Hobby Stock feature as Mathew Cleveland has his hands full with fending off both Scott and Easton Riedner. Cleveland turned in an amazing race to keep the Riedners at bay and make a well deserved trip to Victory Lane.

Kaleb Baumgart outran Jonathan Kemp to turn one to take the race lead at the start of the 30 lap Great North Legends feature. Cael Slater began to pressure Baumgart for the lead and would make the move around Baumgart to move into the top spot on lap six. Ayrton Brockhouse began picking off drivers one by one before moving into the runner-up spot on lap nine. Now the battle was on for the lead as Brockhouse began to reel in Slater. That pursuit was held up by a yellow on lap 12 for a spin in turn two by Riley Goodwin. Brockhouse pursued Slater for a few laps after the restart before striking and powering around Slater to become the new leader on lap 14. Brockhouse began to open up his lead on the field, but two caution periods slowed his efforts.  Solo spins by Devon Lee on lap 22 and Dalton Lee on lap 25 gave Slater new chances at the lead. Brockhouse would drive away from Slater on both restarts and capture his first checkered flag victory of the season.

For a change of pace, officials decided to run two features for the INEX Bandoleros. Kam Martinez shot to the front at the start of the first 20 lap feature. Jaxxston Jump was ‘slicing and dicing’ his way quickly through the field before catching and passing Martinez for the number one position on lap three. Yellow flew on lap four for a spin in turn three by Carter Clapp. As Jump began to open up his lead, Ethan Jensen began to slowly catch up to the leader. A solo spin by A.J. Sauter on lap 11 was a big break for Jensen to go after Jump. Jump got ahead of Jensen on the restart, but suddenly on lap 13 a mechanical issue brought Jensen’s race to a sudden end. Jump ends up going from barrel rolling his race car a few weeks ago to putting in a dominant performance to capture his first career feature win.

Starting sixth in 20 lap INEX Bandolero feature #2, Bentley Thompson zoomed past traffic to put himself in the lead. Roman Crow would not let Thompson get away that easy as he used the outside lane to move to the front on lap two. Thompson stuck to the low line and found a way back around Crow to take back first place on lap four. Both of the Oldehoff brothers have been the biggest challengers to Thompson for a long time. Axel and Ace moved into second and third spots before halfway and started to put a lot of pressure on Thompson. First Axel tried to get around Thompson but could not finish the effort. Ace then looked to challenge Thompson for the lead but he also could not get close enough to look for the lead. Thompson did a  masterful job of driving to hold off both Oldenhoff brothers and score his second straight feature victory.

The 20 lap Hobby Stock feature saw Tyler Stuber lead his first ever feature lap, but Mathew Cleveland powered under him to settle into the lead on lap two. Scott Riedner and grandson Easton Riedner would crack the top three by lap five, and began to close in on Cleveland for the lead. Scott tried to find a way around Cleveland, but got loose on lap nine and allowed Easton to have a shot at the leader. For many laps Easton tried to find an opening to get around Cleveland but could not get the break he was looking for. Scott would catch back up to the front two and make the fight to the finish interesting again. Cleveland would pull out an incredible drive to hold back both Riedners and score his first career checkered flag.

The front row of Caleb Uksas and A.J. Finnigan did not play nice at the start of the Hornet feature as they got tangled up in turn two. Both drivers took hard hits into the outside wall, but Uksas and Finnigan would both check out a-okay. The second try to start did not go well also as Braxtyn Moore collided with Joshua Schwartz and Tyler Vincetich. Moore had to start at the rear of the field for causing that incident. The third time was the charm as defending champion Glen Bush, Jr. showed the way for the first three laps. Jim Rohde powered around Bush, Jr. on the outside to take over the number one position on lap four. Coming from deep in the field, Taylor Dawson carved his way through the field to catch Rhode and used the outside lane to take over the lead on lap nine. They battled side-by-side for a few laps before there was contact that allowed Rhode to take back the top spot with three laps to go. Rhode pulled away from Dawson down the stretch to claim his first feature win at Tomah Sparta Speedway.

After a spin by Trenton Frye in turn three that waved off the first start of the Sixers feature, Parker Thompson nosed ahead of Landin Frye to lead the first two laps of the race. Frye held the outside lane before powering around Thompson to settle into the top spot on lap three. After starting mid-field, Dustin McCracken juked and jived his way through traffic before catching up to Frye and going around him for the lead on lap seven. McCracken’s sizable lead would go away thanks to a spinning James Gratz in turn three on lap 12. Curtis Hellickson and Matt Moore would be McCracken’s challengers to his throne on the restart. McCracken opened up a little bit of a lead over the closing laps to notch his first feature victory this year.

The vintage modifieds of the Milwaukee Stock Car Racing Association made their fourth straight appearance at Tomah, and they put on another great show for the fans. Dale Herring took the lead at the start of the feature, and held it for the first seven laps. Butch Titel and his bright orange modified drove around Herring to move into first place on lap eight. Soon the father and son duo of Jeff and Darrin Allard would move into the top three and begin their pursuit of Titel. Darrin began to fall back through the field while Jeff continued to chase after Titel. Jeff Allard only got as close as five car lengths as Titel crossed the finish line in first.
