EURICK WINS BIG IN THE AMERICAN SUPER CUP SERIES AT TOMAH

By: Paul Reichert July 2, 2021
Another great crowd showed up at Tomah-Sparta Speedway to witness more action packed racing on a steamy summer evening. The crowd always warmly welcomes the traveling series that have stopped at Daytomah and put on just as exciting a show as the regular weekly divisions do. On this night the quarter-scale cars of American Super Cup Series put on another tremendous show for the fans. Sean Eurick took advantage of the leader running wide in turns one and two with five laps to go to score the victory.

Brandon Vines charged past Tony Rendina at the start of the American Super Cup Series feature to lead the early going.. Vines was slowly pulling away from Rendina and the rest of the field as he was on a mission to win the feature for a second straight year. Vines would eventually have a challenger to contend with in the later stages of the feature. Sean Eurick, the fast qualifier earlier in the night, was methodically making his way through the field from his sixth starting spot. On lap seven Eurick would power his way around Rendina on the outside to settle into second. Even though Eurick was eating away at Vines’ lead, it would be a slip up by Vines that would be the golden opportunity for Eurick. Vines ran a bit wide in turns one and two and that allowed Eurick to stick to the low line, Eurick shot past Vines to assume the race lead with five laps to go. While Vines was slipped back into the field in the final few laps Eurick was pulling away with ease as he took the checkered flag first.

The opening lap of the Clark Powersport of HIllsboro Modified feature saw Derrin Salo power past Bill Schott to take control of the race. Four laps later, Denny Schott would power his way around ‘Fire Marshall’ Bill to take over second. As the field took the crossed flags to indicate it was the halfway mark, Schott was on Salo’s tail looking for a way by the ‘Flying
Finlander’. Schott hoped for a mistake by Salo to go low on the point leader, but Salo was running a perfect low line. Schott tried a few times to get a run on the outside and power past Salo. The problem was Schott lost momentum coming out of turn four and fell behind the leader. Salo would keep Schott in his rear view over the final few laps to drive away with his second victory of the year.

Dan Frye jumped out ahead of James Hendricks, Jr. to lead the early laps of the Sportsmen feature. Hendricks has put in some good runs in his first season racing in the Sportsmen division, and tonight he was going for a clean sweep of the division. Hendricks was able to stay right behind Frye for much of the race. A couple of slips allowed Frye to open his lead up to a couple car lengths, but Hendricks gathered things back together and closed right back up on the two-time Six Shooter champion. Hendricks was looking for the right chance to go after Frye for the top spot for several laps. Hendricks tried to get a run to go to the high side of Frye, but could not build up momentum to make that move. Frye stayed ahead of Hendricks and his challenges to capture his second #1 finish of the season.

Andy Muller’s switch from a Six Shooter to a Hobby Stock has had some growing pains but also some good showings. He showed the way for the first few laps of the Hobby Stock feature
before being swallowed up by the bright red 107 machine of Thomas Farra. Farra was pulling away from the field, but by lap eight Andy Moore made his way around Dillon Scott to take over the runner-up spot. It took Moore only three laps to catch Farra and drive right by him on the outside to claim the race lead. Shortly after that Shelby Lockington looped ‘Big Bertha’ on the front straight to bring out the yellow flag. Thomas Farra had new life on the restart and another chance to reclaim the lead from Moore.. Moore would make driving away from Farra look easy on the restart as he ran away with checkered flag number four for 2021.

In the Oops! Saloon and Grill by Angie Hornet feature, Mike Hennessy, Jr. drove past reigning track champion Shawn McCarthy to assume command of the race. The Hennessy name is a well known racing name is Wisconsin racing circles. Mike Jr.’s dad Mike Hennessy was a successful Hobby Stock and Late Model Sportsmen racer for years. While Hennessy, Jr. was opening up his advantage on McCarthy, both drivers were leaving the field in the dust. The front runners in the point standings like Mason Morphy, Zach Oliver and Bryan Wallace were struggling to make their way through the field and try to challenge for the win. With four laps to go that trio would crack the top five but would not have anything for the lead twosome. Hennessy, Jr. was in the next county as he put on an impressive drive to score his first ever feature win at ‘Daytomah’.

The TACU Credit Union Six Shooter feature had a rough start when Andrew Moore tried to create an opening that was not there and spun out Curtis Hellickson. LaCrosse High School champion Ashton Kinsey, Devin Glass, Joshua Zacharias and Tristan Drazkowski got collected in the ensuing melee. Only Glass and Zacharias were able to be a part of the second try to start the race, which saw Dawsynn Frye charge by Todd Holerud to take the early race lead. The former High School racer began to open up a lead on the field, but soon would have to deal with other drivers hungry for a win. Tim Murphy, Sr. moved into second just before the halfway mark and quickly made up ground on Frye. Murphy, Sr. used the outside line to drive around Frye and into the race lead with five laps to go. With two laps to go, point leader Dustin McCracken drove around Frye to take over second. McCracken tried to make things interesting for Murphy, Sr. in the last two laps but Murphy, Sr. kept him at bay and hit the finish line first.

Action continues next Friday, July 9 with the inaugural running of the Hornet Hustle. Some extra money will be added to the purse for the drivers to go after in the feature event. The Modifieds, Sportsmen, Hobby Stocks, Six Shooters and the Chaos division’s Stop-N-Go race will also be a part of the show. Bring yourself and the kids out to Daytomah early because the first Kids’ Races in several months will be taking place after qualifying. Gates open at 5, qualifying starts up at 6, Kids’ Rides begin shortly after 7 and the first green flag of the night flies at 7:30.
