The cool weather made night two at Tomah-Sparta Speedway feel like we were experiencing the Fall Classic early. Despite the cool weather, there was a lot of hot racing action on the track. A lot of close competition, door handle to door handle racing and nail biting finishes were the theme of the night.
The best race of the night was the first Chaos race of the season, the 2nd Over the Line Wins race for the Six Shooters. Things got strung out during the race, but things really tightened up on the final lap. There were two rows of three wide down the back straight and they stayed that way through turns three and four. As they came out of turn four, track announcer Dan Deicher exclaimed “They’re four wide coming out of turn four for the win!” Clayton Haessig got through the chaos coming to the checkered flag to claim the win.
Larry DeVito was on a huge roll in the Modified division this night. After claiming the heat race win, DeVtio led the first eight laps of the feature. Just when it looked like DeVito would come out on top in the feature, along came fast qualifier Brad Wildes. After finishing second to Nick Quinnell in last’s week feature, Wildes caught and passed DeVito on lap nine and drove away to a comfortable win. David Borntrager ran with the Modifieds and would be the top Sportsmen in the feature event.
We may have a new rivalry brewing in the Hobby Stock division between Andy Moore and Raymond Hardy. After Hardy took the lead three laps into the feature, both drivers battled door handle to door handle for several laps. They swapped the lead back and forth five different times. Eventually Moore shot by Hardy with five laps to go to score his second straight feature win.
Andrew Moore would make his first start of the year in the Hornet feature a successful one. He quickly took the lead from Jordan Finch and drove away from the field. James Rittenhouse, the heat race winner, moved into second and tried to close the gap on Moore. Unfortunately, Rittenhouse began to slow down with a mechanical issue on lap seven. Finch took over the runner-up spot, but Moore was far ahead of the field as he claimed his first win of the season.
Just like last week, Dustin McCracken got out to a big lead in the TACU Six Shooter feature. He led the first eight circuits before Tristan Drazkowski got around McCracken to move into first. The final five laps would be a challenge for Drazkowski as Matt Moore closed the gap. Drazkowski would endure a series of love taps by Moore, but Drazkowski stood his ground and held onto to capture the checkered flag first. Maybe there is a new rivalry beginning here as well.
The Mini Stocks ran their first feature of the season, and it was yet another exciting race. Paul Finch made quick work of Donovan Hawes at the start, but he would have to contend with Wayne Maulsby in the closing laps. Maulsby tried to get under Finch, even tried to go around him. Finch fought off Maulsby’s challenges to wind up in victory lane and ringing the victory bell.
Action continues next Friday, May 17 with the Modifieds, Sportsmen, Hobby Stocks, Hornets and Six Shooters. The first traveling series of the season comes to Tomah-Sparta as the Midwest Dash Series makes its annual appearance. In addition, the Chaos division returns to action with the Hot Dog Race. Gates open at 4:00, qualifying starts at 6:00 and racing action begins at 7:30.
