Besides the likes of Dick Trickle and Tom Reffner being the dominant forces in the Central Wisconsin Racing Association back in the day, there was another driver to watch out for. Nekoosa veteran racer Marv Marzofka was another driver to contend with in every race and at every CWRA track. The second ever CWRA track championship here at Tomah Sparta Speedway back in 1965 would be captured by Marzofka. We honored the driver of the famous ‘Screaming Yellow Zonker” race car with the second running of the Marv Marzofka Classic. After sweeping the twin features at last year’s inaugural Marzofka Classic, Paul Paine stayed just as hot as the summer weather by repeating the feat and claiming both Marzofka Classic features once again.
The first 30 lap CWRA Late Model feature saw Jeff Weinfurter take the early race lead. Paul Paine closed the gap on Weinfurter as he powered underneath the four-time champion to move into the lead on lap six. Tyler Sauter, who swept the Everett Fox Memorial back in May, began to slowly reel in Weinfurter for second. Weinfurter was able to hold back the challenges of Sauter to maintain the runner-up spot. Fast qualifier and new track record holder Dillon Mackesy began to power his way through the field as he fought hard with Sauter before taking over third with ten laps to go. Mackesy put a ton of pressure on Weinfurter as the laps ticked away. Mackesy powered around Weinfurter with two laps remaining, but Paul Paine was out of reach of everyone as he made it three straight Marzofka Classic feature wins at Tomah.
Corey Jankowski was shot out of a cannon as he surged past Monte Gress to lead the start of the second 30 lap CWRA Late Model feature. First feature winner Paul Paine was all over Jeff Weinfurter in the battle for third with even a bit of contact between the two drivers. Paine finally shot by Weinfurter to move into third on lap six, and wasted little time to track down Darek Gress. After driving past Gress for second on lap eight, Paine began to slowly reel in Jankowski. Paine powered under the 2023 champion in turn two to settle into first place just past the halfway point of the race. Defending CWRA champion Mark ‘The King’ Mackesy began to slowly close in on the current point leader. Mackesy powered around Jankowski to take over second place with six laps remaining. Paul Paine has become a juggernaut at Tomah as he swept the twin Marzofka Classic features for a second year in a row, and made it to victory lane in three of the last four CWRA features run.
Riley Goodwin led the opening laps of the 30 lap Great North Legend feature. The top guns of the division were struggling to make forward progress through the field, and that allowed Goodwin to pull away to a sizable lead. Rose Borntreger was the first driver to crack the top three by lap ten. The hood flew up on Elliott Weiler’s machine on lap twelve, but he was able to get back to the pits to fix his issue. Robby Carter began to apply a ton of pressure to Borntreger in a heated fight over third that resulted in contact between the two drivers in turn four on lap 18. The night would end early for Carter as he was forced to retire to the infield. Cale Slater would not let up on Goodwin and his patience finally paid off as he shot to the lead with eight laps left to run. Slater ran a bit wide in turns one and two, and that allowed Ayrton Brockhouse to take over first place with four laps to go. Brockhouse continued his dominance at Tomah Sparta Speedway with another feature trophy to add to his trophy room.
Christopher Flynn led the opening five laps of the INEX Bandolero feature. Bentley Thompson and Ransom Tate tangled in turn four on lap two, but Tate tapped and Thompson returned to his spot. Flynn threw away the lead when he spun out in turn two on lap six. That gave the lead to Axel Oldenhoff on the restart. Oliver Weinkauf powered by Oldenhoff to take over control of the race on lap seven. Chaos ensued on lap nine when drivers spun coming out of turn four and the cars of Blake Michael and Ransom Tate made hard contact with the outside wall. Fortunately both drivers were able to walk away from that incident. Bentley Thompson began to make his presence known off the final restart and surged into second at the expense of Oldenhoff and Emily Billings. Weinkauf had a large enough gap to hold off Thompson and scored his first feature triumph at Tomah Sparta Speedway to continue the Weinkauf racing legacy.
Charles Vian, Jr. powered past Conrad Jorgenson to lead the early stages of the Sportsmen feature. Mike Krueger, Jr. and Jorgenson got into a very exciting fight over second that would eventually go to Krueger, Jr. on lap five. Vian, Jr. maintained a few car lengths advantage over Krueger, Jr., who also kept a few car lengths between himself and Jorgenson. Krueger, Jr. could not make a dent in Vian, Jr. lead. Jorgenson worked very hard to keep up with Krueger, Jr. until he made contact with the back straight wall that allowed Krueger, Jr. to pull away a little further over Jorgenson with six laps remaining. Vian, Jr. was the class of the field as he took home his third feature triumph this season.
The Hobby Stock feature saw Easton Riedner power around Landon Lockington to lead the early going. Soon he would have a challenge from grandpa Scott Riedner, who ducked under his grandson to move into first down the back straight on lap six. Soon after that a mechanical issue ended Easton’s race, but the yellow flew on lap six when he could not make it back to the pits. Scott would have his mirrors full of Elko racers Jimmie Jorgenson and Jesse Fischer as he worked his butt off to maintain the top spot. Fischer continued to work the outside groove hoping for an opening, but soon his car began to struggle as Jorgenson moved into second. Fischer got one last chance to use the outside lane to get around Reidner, but the wiley veteran would not be denied feature win number three on the year.
The Hornets will feel like they are running the Daytona 500 with their big Hornet Hustle event next Friday, August 1. A longer A-main race for them with a larger purse on the line. After running an exciting opening race, the ground pounding asphalt Modifieds return to Tomah Sparta Speedway for round two of their Modified Mayhem Showdown. Who will challenge opening round winner Bill Schott to get one step closer to Modified glory? The Sportsmen, Sixers and Hippos will also be in action on the legendary Tomah Sparta oval. The kids will have a fun time riding in an actual stock car during the Kids’ Rides at intermission. Gates open at 5:30, group qualifying roars to life at 6 and another thrilling night of wheel-to-wheel combat starts at 7.
