SPEEDFEST FIRES UP THE BROCKHOUSE ERA OF RACING AT TOMAH-SPARTA

By:  Paul Reichert

October 12, 2024

Ever since the facility opened back in 1964, Tomah-Sparta Speedway has had to reinvent itself when new owners bought the track or it was reopened after being shut down for a time.  The track has gone through a lot over the past 60 years, but there were questions of Tomah-Sparta continuing after the passing of current track and property owner Shiow S. Chang back in late May.  That is when Tim and Amanda Brockhouse stepped in to purchase the property and the track.  The owners of Great North Legends fell in love with the track when the Great North Legends started racing here a few years ago.  To help kick off their time as the new owners of Tomah-Sparta, the Brockhouses wanted to introduce themselves to the race fans of Cranberry Country with the inaugural running of SpeedFest as their first race as track owners.

Devin Dieringer outran Rose Bornterger to turn one to lead the opening laps of the 30 lap Great North Legends feature.  Borntreger would stick right behind Dieringer waiting for the right time to make her move for the lead position, and that came on lap five as Borntreger vaulted past Dieringer.  As Bornterger was trying to build up her advantage over the field, soon the front runners would start to reel her back in.  Elliott Weiler, the newly crowned Legends champion at Marshfield, moved up to second place by the halfway point and was making sizable gains on Borntreger.  Weiler would power around Borntreger to settle into first place on lap 17.  Fast qualifier Robby Carter was quickly catching Weiler, but the lone yellow flag of the race temporarily slowed his efforts.  Zach Geiger, Michael Holewinski and Abby Blasel got mixed up together in turn four with ten laps left to run.  Carter quickly shot past Weiler right off the restart to take control of the race.  Carter pulled away from Weiler down the stretch to capture his first ever feature victory at Tomah.

The 20 lap INEX Bandolero feature did not get far when outside front row starter Blake Michael spun out in turn two.  Take two went much better for Michael as he charged past Justice Doubrava to lead the first two circuits.  Soon Michael had to deal with 2022 Tomah champion Axel Oldenhoff, who wrestled the top spot away from Michael on lap three.  Working a bit harder to get to the front and challenge Oldenhoff was Bentley Thompson, who captured all six Bandolero track crowns in Wisconsin this year.  Thompson climbed up to the runner-up spot at the crossed flags and was trying to close up on Oldenhoff when yellow was displayed with seven laps remaining.  Logen Carter tagged the outside wall on the front straight and came to a stop just past the flag stand.  The two most recent Tomah champions lined up next to each other on the restart, and racing neck and neck for a lap Thompson was able to drive around Oldenhoff down the back straight to become the leader on lap 15  Just when it looked like Thomspon would add another Tomah feature trophy to his large display case, Thompson ran a bit wide in turn one with two laps to go.  That allowed Oldenhoff to surge by Thompson to reclaim the #1 position, while Thompson suddenly had his hands full fighting off brother Ace Oldenhoff for second.

A spin by James Gratz down the back straight on the first lap of the Six Shooter feature forced a  complete restart.  Andy Moore outpowered relative Andrew Moore to the lead on the rerack, while Adam Moore would make Andrew surrender the runner-up spot on lap two.  The ultimate family feud would happen over the remaining 23 laps between the dominators of the Hobby Stock class at both LaCrosse and Tomah.  Just when Adam got alongside Andy to challenge him for the lead, lapped traffic would halt Adam’s progress and keep Andy in the lead.  Matt Moore drove around Andrew to take over third just before the midway mark of the race as they began to slowly creep up on their siblings to make the finish of the race a little ‘Moore’ interesting.  Lapped traffic continued to be the nemesis of Adam Moore as the laps counted down.  Andy Moore pulled off a masterful drive to hit the finish line in first place as the Moores accomplished something never seen before at any racetrack with an historic 1-2-3-4 finish.

This is just the beginning of bigger and better things to come at Tomah-Sparta Speedway with new owners Tim and Amanda Brockhouse.  Many improvements will be happening at the track during the off-season before and after the return of the Impact Survival Series sanctioned Chill Chaser Enduro on New Years’ Day.  Before we look forward to 2025, we will celebrate 2024 during the Champions’ Banquet at Club 16 in Sparta on October 26th.  Make sure you get your ticket orders in as soon as possible to relieve the great moments that happened during the just completed race season.  Make sure you like the track’s Facebook page to follow the progress of the improvements and updates on the upcoming 2025 racing season, visit our website at tomahspartaspeedway.com or call the track office at 608-461-1920.
